Now And Zen Dog Training (formerly Canine Connections) was started by Nan Long, CPDT-KA in 2002. Our mission is to help dogs and their humans attain a mutual understanding thru compassionate training methods. We base our training methods on positive, praise-based training techniques, building a foundation of benevolent leadership, built with trust and respect.
Bringing her life long experience and formal training working with dogs and other species. Growing up in a farm in Minnesota she found connection with her many dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, horses and rabbits. A young member of 4-H and later also a member of the Future Farmer of America her studies have always been oriented towards animals. She also had a career in the show ring for many years with her animals.
Nan spends time working with the local veterinarians, helping local shelter dogs and rescue groups and presenting dog bite safety programs to local schools free of charge. She has been training dogs and their people in the Brevard, North Carolina are since 2002. We also offer on-site training help during stays at our dog friendly rentals DogWoods Retreat.
Nan is certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), Established in 2001, it is the leading independent certifying organization for the dog training profession. The CCPDT is the leader in the development of rigorous exams to demonstrate mastery of humane, science-based dog training practices. Thousands of dog training professionals worldwide maintain the CCPDT’s certifications as a mark of high professional distinction.
Integrity: As certificants of the CCPDT we have pledged adherence to a strict ethical code and to abide by the use of Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive effective behavior policy (LIMA) in our training methods. We have clearly stated accepted principles that govern our conduct as dog training and/or behavior professionals.
Education: We believe the public has the right to work with dog training professionals who are not only knowledgeable but whose knowledge is based on current, sound scientific principles.
Excellence: We are recognized by documented training and behavior experience as valid, functional criteria relevant to the certification process.
Scientific Principles: We are committed to current behavioral science and it’s application to dog training and behavior consulting.
She is also a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, a supporting member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, and a member of Doggone Safe and a presenter of their dog bite safety programs.
