There is a lot of value in allowing dogs agency. Old school-style dog training does not allow dogs to freedom to choose. They were forced to participate in things they are afraid of. Current behavioral scientific studies show that when a dog is stressed, giving them space and the choice to move away, helps them to reset their nervous system instead of creating an amplified response.
When stress occurs to the system it causes physiological responses that are controlled by the dog’s sympathetic nervous system. The brain heats up and initiates a fight or flight reaction. This reaction heightens their arousal and can lead to impulsive reactive behaviors. By allowing the dog more space, you are letting them know that you are not a threat. This helps to soften the dog’s response to the stressor.
We have given the dog a chance to regulate their emotions so that the parasympathetic nervous system can induce a calming effect. If we continue to stress the dog we create more toxic stress and increase the likelihood of stress-related responses occurring.
